The UN member states have adopted a new agenda for sustainable development, including a set of universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Have they succeeded in striking a new partnership for protecting and providing global public goods for current and future generations? Have they paved the ground for the implementation of an ambitious agenda that adequately balances the economic, social and ecological dimensions of development in the next decade?

UN Assistant Secretary-General Thomas Gass provided a critical appraisal of the Summit’s outcome and outlined what needs to be done to implement the new agenda effectively. He also discussed which role the UN system can play in the promotion, implementation and monitoring of the new agenda.

Speaker:
Thomas Gass, Assistant Secretary-General, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA)

Comment:
Imme Scholz, Deputy Director of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)
