In a series of international conferences during the last years, member states of the United Nations and civil society have created a new and powerful vision of “The future we want” (Rio+20 Conference) and for “Transforming our world” (2030 Agenda). The global transformation to sustainability sets the new and universally recognised frame for development worldwide. Implementing the 2030 Agenda will require a well-functioning United Nations system as the center for global development cooperation. The United Nations have never before been confronted with a development challenge of that order. Its development pillar is criticised for being fragmented, inefficient and politically encrusted. There is need for a fundamental repositioning of the United Nations system of development cooperation.

  • What role can and should the United Nations play in the transformation to global sustainability?
  • What new development understanding is needed?
  • What organisational reforms are necessary to make the United Nations “fit for purpose”?
