After more than two years of negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations, the international community has agreed on a new agenda for sustainable development to succeed the Millennium Development Goals. It features 17 new Sustainable Development Goals that aim to end poverty, promote prosperity and people’s well-being while protecting the environment by 2030. Jens Martens, Director of the Global Policy Forum Europe, was directly involved in the negotiation process and provided his analysis and views. What were the most critical points of contention among negotiators? What role did Germany and other Western countries play? How could civil society actors bring in their views? How was consensus reached in the end? And how can the new agenda be assessed?
Speaker:
- Jens Martens, Executive Director, Global Policy Forum (GPF)
- Christine Hackenesch, Researcher, Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik / German Development Institute (DIE)
The lecture series is co-organised by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), the Forum Internationale Wissenschaft (fiw) and the Liaison Office International Academic Sciences of the UN City of Bonn.
