The world is witnessing multiple extreme events. Understanding the complex interactions among these events is important in a multi-risk society. Any program or investment that builds a socially cohesive, resilient society should identify possible scenarios and options through a comprehensive multi-risk assessment. The DFG 'Risk Transformation and Societal Resilience under Extreme Events' Round Table (DFG-RT) aims to bring together scholars to understand risk transformation's synergistic and antagonistic impacts in building resilient societies. Risks are now multiple, compounding, and systemic, yet our approaches are siloed, bounded (within a jurisdiction), fragmented, and linear in approaches. We must rethink our approaches to be proactive and agile, respond to uncertainty, and remain flexible to transform risks for societal betterment. The DFG-RT, drawing from drought, pastoralism, and urbanization events in East and West Africa, calls for new ways of thinking about policies, institutions, and practices to embrace uncertainty and flexibility toward managing extreme events. To address this, the DFG-RT will have four sessions revolving around the science-policy interface - Epistemologies of Risk, Social Cohesion, Food Security, and Health, and its ability to recognize transformation across urban-peri-urban-agriculture and pastoral livelihood.
