Increasing the share of renewable resources is one of the main strategies towards sustainable development. Yet, to ensure a successful energy transition towards sustainable development, energy planning ought to include and engage the various stakeholders.

People-centric and participatory approaches can be key to advancing sustainable development energy policies, rally public support around them and avoid conflicts. These approaches allow advancing the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 of ensuring access to affordable and clean energy in parallel to SDG 16 of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies.

This side event explored different ways in which these approaches can be used to conduct research to support policy advice to energy planners drawing on examples from research projects recently carried out in the Middle East North Africa Region, mainly from the project MENA Sustainable Electricity Trajectories (MENA SELECT).

The event was an official side event as a part of the 2017 Interconnections Zone during COP 23 at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE).
