The G20 Foreign Ministers met on 16 and 17 February 2017 in Bonn, Germany’s United Nations City, to discuss the role of foreign policy in supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In light of mounting global challenges and the resurgence of populist and nationalist policies, the focus on the 2030 Agenda – as a global framework to enhance worldwide well-being – seems more important than ever. This focus is reflected, too, in the priorities of the German G20 presidency that is committed to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda as well as the Paris Agreement on climate change. The G20 can play a much needed leading-by-example role through the implementation of the Agenda 2030 in G20 countries and by supporting more transformative modes of international cooperation among G20 countries and towards non-G20 countries. Effective and fair multilateral institutions and processes are an important prerequisite for the successful implementation of the Agenda 2030. It is in strengthening multilateralism that foreign policy in general as well as G20 Foreign Ministers can play a crucial role.

On the occasion of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), the global Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the United Nations’ City of Bonn organised a panel discussion that brought together high-level policy makers and senior representatives of think tanks to reflect on the role of the G20 as a forum for supporting multilateral processes and institutions.

This panel discussion was part of the T20 process. The Think20 (T20) is a network of research institutes and think tanks from the G20 countries. The T20 provides research-based policy advice to the G20, facilitates interaction among its members and the policy community, and communicates with the broader public about issues of global importance. The T20 blog publishes analytical and opinion pieces by high-level experts on key issues ahead of the 2017 G20 Summit in Hamburg. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) coordinate the T20 process during the German presidency in 2016 and 2017. One of the key outcomes of the T20 Germany process will be the establishment of an additional permanent web-based G20 Insight Platform that provides policy analysis to support G20 policy making.
