2nd International Research and Policy Workshop on Migration and Development hosted by the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE).
As European, African and Middle Eastern countries struggle to manage rapid increases in forced displacement, the policy community is increasingly recognizing the role that state fragility and under-development play in displacement and irregular migration. Government capacity, legitimacy, and the ability to provide for collective security are all interwoven factors that influence peoples’ decisions to migrate or take flight. On the receiving side, communities and countries often face significant challenges providing for displaced populations. This can lead to further irregular migration, as well as risks of conflict and strain on public goods.
This workshop had brought together policy makers and academic researchers, to identify how cutting-edge research on migration and forced displacement can be applied to policy making. It has been also an opportunity for academic researchers to learn about the issues that are most pressing for the policy community, and how these needs can inform new research directions.
Attendance was by invitation only.
