In the first of five research-in-progress seminars co-hosted this autumn and winter by the American Associations of Geographers’ (AAG) Development Geographies Specialty Group and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Professor Emma Mawdsley of the University of Cambridge is asking for comments and suggestions on a recently funded research grant exploring the role of private for-profit contractors. Working with six co-investigators, Mawdsley seeks to deliver the first detailed study of development consultants and development contractors within the UK development architecture through an examination of contracting arrangements, institutional functioning, personnel experiences, financial flows, and policy influence. The seminar is open to everyone interested in the topic irrespective of affiliation or geographic location. Researchers as well as practitioners are encouraged to join. Participants need to register in advance to receive a copy of the grant proposal and, on the day of the event, the Zoom link to the seminar. Professor Mawdsley is going to highlight a number of aspects for discussion at the outset; those present will then discuss these aspects assuming that all participants have read the proposal in advance. The seminar will be moderated by Professor Jamey Essex (University of Windsor) and Professor Daniel Esser (DIE). Chatham House rules apply.
