Research has shown that forest conservation can create benefits for local communities. But forest conservation is not always leading to “win-win” outcomes. In the context of REDD+ and the oil palm boom the basic agrarian questions of who owns what and who gains what are (re-)gaining importance. Against this backdrop this workshops sought to facilitate transdisciplinary exchange and knowledge creation to support the development of socially inclusive conservation policies that create benefits for the most vulnerable members of society. Moreover, the workshop aimed at fostering transdisciplinary cooperation and co-design of future research initiatives.

For three years the Province of Jambi is one of Indonesia’s REDD+ pilot provinces. Jambi’s REDD+ action plan (SRAP) identifies pro-poor benefits of REDD+ and aims to strengthen the land rights of local communities. Article 5 of the Paris Agreement (often referred to as REDD+ paragraph) encourages parties to “[…] take action to conserve and enhance, as appropriate, sinks and reservoirs of greenhouse gases […] including forests”. Indonesia’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) identifies REDD+ and the broader land-use sector as a key arena for achieving the transformation towards a low carbon economy.
Against this backdrop this workshop supported

  • transdisciplinary exchange and knowledge creation for designing socially inclusive conservation interventions;
  • the discussion of findings of the CRC 990 sub-project CO2 of scholars from University of Jambi, Bogor Agricultural University, University of Göttingen and German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE);
  • exchange on co-design of future transdisciplinary cooperation;
  • reflections on conservation mechanisms such as REDD+ and ecosystem restoration.
