Russia’s attack on Ukraine is posing direct and profound challenges for international cooperation. While the global effects of the conflict can be felt on many fronts, perspectives on how to address Russia’s breach of international law and its indirect international consequences (for food and energy security, for instance) vary. At the same time, the complex impact of the climate crisis is becoming increasingly tangible. This crisis requires urgent collective action on the part of societies around the world, whose short-term interests conflict with one another at times. Transnational cooperation is becoming increasingly difficult and yet all the more important, given tensions between countries and differing world views. The same is true of the
research sector itself, which, as a sub-system of society, practises cooperation as a basic instrument of knowledge production. Global power structures have been undergoing change for a long time and thus also place more complex demands on researchers in crisis situations.
