Opinion - On Thursday Femke Halsema will be installed as Mayor of Amsterdam. According to Sander Chan, the city can catch up and become a champion of climate action with its first green mayor.
Worldwide, cities are responsible for more than 70 percent of energy-related greenhouse gases. In addition, cities are increasingly feeling the effects of climate change, such as intense heat waves, periods of drought and heavy precipitation. These impacts entail high costs to make cities climate-proof. Fortunately, cities are increasingly becomeing champions of climate action.
More and more cities, from Washington to Sydney, commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. Even fast-growing cities in developing countries that carry little historical responsibility for emitting the greenhouse gases that cause climate change, such as Accra, Rio de Janeiro, Dar es Salaam and Dakar, take strong measures to become climate neutral. Both economically and morally, Amsterdam cannot permit itself to stay behind.
