Volltext/Full text

The 2017 Nepali Local Elections marked the first opportunity in over a decade for citizens to vote for representatives at the local governmental level across Nepal. Held in three phases between May and September of 2017, this set of elections holds great historical significance as they are also the first local level elections to be held since the promulgation of the new Constitution of Nepal of 2015, which introduced a three-tier federal governance system. Thus, the 2017 elections represent key element of the Nepalese peace process moving forward. How has the introduction of local elections affected peace and the social fabric in Nepal? The elections were initially highly criticized by some and laden with high expectations by others. This report presents some key findings of a comprehensive research study on the introduction of the elections jointly conducted by the Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik/German Development Institute (DIE) and Centre for Social Change (CSC) between the period of January-May 2021. This report outlines the key outcomes, insights, and takeaways obtained in this study.
