T20 Africa
T20 Africa
T20 Africa engages in cross-regional joint knowledge production and provides evidence-based policy advice related to cooperation between African think tanks and with other G20 countries. The network encompasses leading think tanks from across Africa and G20 countries.
The group works on a broad range of issues relevant to economic, social and political change in Africa and the world economy, including infrastructure, trade, agriculture, climate, and the political and social environment in which socio-economic reforms take place.
Since the AU officially joined the G20, African think tanks engagement with each other and with key players of the G20 is more pertinent than ever. The group engages in joint research and advisory work with a view to the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as the G20 work streams. As secretariats of the group, the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) provide coordination, while engaging a troika of both the G20 Presidencies and regional representation of African think tanks. Knowledge institutions such as AUDA-NEPAD as well as organisations such as UNCTAD and the OECD Development Centre are key partners of the Group.
T20 Africa was originally initiated as an Africa Standing Group (T20 ASG) in May 2017 and was an outcome of the first T20 Africa Conference that took place in February 2017 in Johannesburg. It can also draw on significant support from the Managing Global Governance (MGG) and Shaping Futures (SF) networks, hosted by IDOS.
