Tomorrow's Development System

In a context characterised by multiple interconnected global crises – climate change, sluggish Covid-19 recovery, rising inequality and geopolitical competition – we explore to what extent the global development system is able to address these challenges.

The IDOS publication series “Tomorrow’s Development System” addresses the scholarly and policy focused debate on how the development system is evolving. Contributions to the series investigate how shared responsibilities for addressing development can be discussed in multi-actor settings, how global collective actions succeeds or fails to foster sustainable development outcomes and how solidarity based cooperation remains viable in this context. In particular, we focus on key reform processes that aim to provide answers to the question how national socio-economic development in developing countries can be supported, while simultaneously mobilizing more financial resources and reforming (multilateral) institutions to ensure the equitable and sustainable provision of global public goods. The series therefore highlights strategic questions that address the future of the development system on a fundamental level, including for instance the climate finance and official development assistance nexus or the reform of multilateral development institutions.
