Sustainable economic development in Africa
Sustainable economic development in Africa
Deep changes in the world economy require a reassessment of development opportunities for African countries. These include: digitization; the shift to low carbon economies; new protectionism and trade wars in the north; new opportunities for regional integration in Africa; new demand patterns of global middle classes; worldwide shortage of fertile soil; and relocation of low paid jobs away from China.
How do these changes affect the opportunities for sustainable economic development in Africa? Under which political-economic conditions can these opportunities be used to increase prosperity on a broad basis and to strengthen social cohesion? How do these conditions differ from country to country?
Ongoing research at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) is devoted to specific aspects such as structural change and structural policy, agricultural investments, supply chains, digitization, trade policy, direct investment and job relocation and financial market development. Overall, this gives orientation in terms of conditions for inclusive structural change and social cohesion in the region.
