SDSN Germany-Kooperationsprojekt: FABLE

Shifting towards sustainable land-use and food systems is critical to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement, including food security, net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, and protection of biodiversity. To design and implement the sustainable transformation of our food and land-use systems, countries will need to carefully assess the trade-offs between the competing land uses for food production, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation, among others.

Project description

The Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land-Use, and Energy (FABLE) Consortium is convened as part of the Food and Land-Use Coalition (FOLU). It aims to understand how countries can transition towards sustainable land-use and food systems. In particular, they ask how countries can collectively meet associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. FABLE comprises 20 country teams, which develop data and modelling infrastructure to promote ambitious, integrated strategies towards sustainable land-use and food systems.

The FABLE Secretariat, led by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), with support from EAT and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), coordinates the FABLE Consortium. The Consortium’s first report Pathways to Sustainable Land-Use and Food Systems was published in July 2019 and presents initial pathways from 18 countries.
