BioCAM4 – Biodiversity Integration in Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Actions for Planet, People, and Human Health

BioCAM4 develops methodologies for mapping Nature-based Climate Action (NBCA) trends worldwide and assessing local opportunities and challenges for NBCAs with dedicated deep-dive studies in two world regions: East Africa and Central America. Focus lies on the climate-biodiversity interdependence, bringing together the broad concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and collaborative climate actions by non-state and subnational actors.

Project description

The BioCAM4 project is an international consortium for the study of how different actors can work together to address climate change and protect biodiversity simultaneously. While nature-based climate actions (NBCAs) are promising for the mitigation and adaptation to climate impacts and to promote biodiversity, they often face challenges such as inequity and poor collaboration. BioCAM4 aims to enhance the understanding of NBCAs by:

  • Global Mapping and Analysis: Creating an open-access global database of NBCAs to assess their distribution, patterns, and performance.
  • Context-specific Deep-Dives: Conducting participatory research in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Kenya and Rwanda to explore drivers, barriers, and outcomes of NBCAs.
  • Research Translation and Policy Guidance: Translating research findings into actionable recommendations for implementers and funders.

Drawing on inter- and transdisciplinary and participatory methods, BioCAM4 will improve the assessment, design and scaling of NBCAs towards more effective and just outcomes.
