International team of researchers analyse International Summits

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the Brookings Institution have launched an innovative project entitled National Perspectives on Global Leadership. One significant output of this project is Soundings, a series of commentaries on public perceptions of national leaders’ performances at key international events. Analysts from the project’s 12 partner institutions, among them Thomas Fues of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), reflect on how global leaders represent their respective countries’ interests and how the media gauges their performance.

The authors also reflect on the implications of these domestic perceptions for restoring trust and confidence in national leadership and global governance. Papers in this first series report on national perspectives of leadership at the April 2009 G20 Summit in London. The team of researchers will also analyse future summits, such as the G8-Summit in Italy from 8 - 10 July in L'Aquila.
