This paper offers a critical examination of the supposed social divide along the category of »openness« and the related notions of cosmopolitanism and globalisation. It argues that it is premature to take as a starting point the assumption of a split between»cosmopolitan« and »locally anchored« and, what is more, to try to resolve it toward a supposedly more motivationally plausible patriotism. The aim of my contribution is to systematise different varieties of »openness,« »globalisation,« and »cosmopolitanism« on the basis of political practice and rhetoric, but with recourse to political philosophy. I thereby aim to offer a more differentiated understanding of the lines of conflict that in fact need to be negotiated in shaping our transnational relations.
