The world urgently needs to address the water crisis at the global level. Decision-makers must overcome national interests to address the global water crises at this level too, because the origins (e.g., trade, climate) and the solutions (e.g., precipitation sheds) of many of these problems lie beyond the realm of nation states. Addressing the water crises globally requires a broadly supported, joint international effort from the United Nations and its member states. The transformation of global water governance should go beyond announcements at global meetings and instead foster a comprehensive and coherent approach, informed by all relevant scientific disciplines, stakeholders and types of knowledge.
