G20

G20 Policy Research Group

On 21 and 22 November 2020, the heads of state and government of the G20 met for their fifteenth summit, this time chaired by Saudi Arabia, to decide on proposals for solutions to current global problems, such as the COVID-19 crisis. The G20 met for the first time in this format in November 2008 in Washington in the midst of the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The G20, which describes itself as the “premier forum for international economic cooperation”, has played a significant role in international politics for over 10 years. The G20 has evolved in terms of the depth of the underlying process, the breadth of topics that are on the agenda and the number of stakeholders that are involved in the process since then. At the same time, the G20 is increasingly subject to criticism with regard to its effectiveness in addressing global challenges ranging from climate change, sustainable development, trade protectionism and forced migration. Critics also point to the lack of legitimacy of the G20, as a self-selected club of economically powerful countries, vis-à-vis non-G20 countries and its citizens.

The “G20 Policy Research Group”, based at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), accompanies the G20 process and other club governance formats such as the BRICS, MIKTA and G7 from the perspective of global sustainable development through research and policy advice. DIE experts take an active role in the Think20, a group of think tanks from G20 countries. The DIE coordinates the T20 Africa Standing Group, which includes think tanks from Africa and the partner organizations of the Managing Global Governance Program, and co-founded the G20 Trade and Investment Research Network (TIRN). The Future of Globalisation Blog provides a platform for debates on current global economic issues, global power shifts and the role of formal and informal global governance institutions.

In this web special we provide information about our experts, publications and events.
