On 1 December Germany officially takes over the G20 Presidency from China. With the beginning of Germany's G20 Presidency for 2016/2017, the T20 will hold its inaugural conference of this year's process, which will jointly be coordinated by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy / Kieler Institut für Weltwirtschaftsforschung (IfW). The conference “Cohesion in Diversity: Accompanying the German G20 Presidency” will feature and enable discussions and exchange between Think Tanks from G20 countries with a strong representation of experts from emerging economies.

Under the Leitmotif of “Cohesion in Diversity” the conference will bring together Think Tank scholars from a diverse range of countries and disciplines who are striving to equip G20 leaders with innovative and implementable policy options. At the same time, the Leitmotif “Cohesion in Diversity” is meant to highlight the societal challenges faced by G20 members, as well as the challenge for this diverse group of countries to work jointly for the global common good. In these times of uncertainty and growing nationalism, the role of the T20 in fostering dialogue and cooperative approaches to global challenges has grown ever more important.

The conference will feature leading Think Tank representatives from the G20 countries, high-level officials and experts from other stakeholders in dialogue, plenary and break-out sessions, regarding such topical issues as the G20’s global responsibility, the fostering of global sustainability, the G20’s growth agenda and the role of the G20 in building a resilient global governance architecture. The conference will also provide space for discussing the work of the T20 Task Forces that have been set up to develop empirically-based recommendations for the G20.

The T20 is a network of Think Tanks from G20 countries and serves as an "ideas bank" for the G20. For this purpose, T20 organizes the collaboration of global think tanks and high-level experts in order to provide analytical depth to ongoing G20 discussions and produce ideas to help the G20 on delivering concrete and sustainable policy measures. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) have been encouraged by the German government to organise the T20 process during the German Presidency in 2016 and 2017. Dennis Snower (President of IfW) and Dirk Messner (Director of DIE) will jointly chair the T20 during this time.
