The Conference
The Conference “Social Inequalities and Global Interdependencies: Latin American Configurations” is the Inaugural Conference of the Research Network on Interdependent Inequalities in Latin America desiguALdades.net. The conference will bring together an international community of scholars to explore the potentials and challenges of a new transregional paradigm for researching social inequality in Latin America.

Since colonization, the economic, social, and political developments of the Latin American subcontinent have been shaped by entanglements with other world regions. However, for the field of social inequalities these transregional entanglements have not been systematically addressed. Today, it is particularly the junctures and disjunctures produced by the multidimensional processes of globalization that make it necessary to tackle the issue of social inequality from a transregional perspective and to analyze how socio-economic, socio-political and socio-ecological dimensions of inequality are constituded, transformed and contested by growing transregional and global interconnectedness.

Program
The conference explored the ongoing persistence and even accentuation of socio-economic inequalities within a globalized economy, the transformation of socio-political inequalities by the emergence of (trans)regional representations, experiences, and negotiation processes of social inequalities, and the emergence of new socio-ecological inequalities in the context of the unequal distribution of global environmental risks and costs. The conference also enhanced a critical reflection on theoretical ad methodological challenges for the research on social inequalities due to deterritorialization and globalization.

In addition to the presentations of the principal investigators, eminent scholars in the field of social inequality contributed keynote lectures framing the themes of the conference.
