WWF South Africa (WWF-SA), in partnership with the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), organised this workshop as part of an international research study titled "Implementing sustainable development goals in an incoherent world: aligning climate action and reduced inequalities." The South African study has been exploring the underlying drivers of policy incoherence, focusing on national-level policies to meet international climate change mitigation commitments, as well as a domestic energy transition and integrated resource management along the Water-Energy-Food nexus.

Objectives of the Broader South African Case Study:

  • Gain insight into goal conflicts and synergies between national targets as they relate to the Just Energy Transition and the Water-Energy-Food nexus while aiming to meet global climate obligations.
  • Understand the political contestation surrounding policy coherence efforts and how actors navigate them, influenced by ideas, interests, and institutions.
  • Assess the impact of (in)coherence on implementation outcomes for water, energy, and food security, as well as for (in)equality.

This was an by invitation-only workshop that followed strict Chatham House rules.
