Regional Migration Governance in Africa: Concepts, trends and policies

Event Type
Roundtable

Location / Date
Bonn, 11.12.2017

Organizer

German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)

While migration from Africa to Europe leads news headlines, migration within the African continent is much more prevalent, and requires effective policy responses. In the last two decades, regional organisations in Africa, such as ECOWAS in West Africa and IGAD at the Horn of Africa, have developed policies to address human mobility. Their institutional weight and credibility means they are increasingly targeted as collaborators by international development organizations, and in the context of European migration-related agreements. Examples are the EU Horn of Africa Migration Route Initiative (“Khartoum Process”) started in 2014 or the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) launched in Valletta, Malta, in 2015. The roundtable will explore how these policies are shaping regional migration in Africa, and what this means for future mobility.
