IDOS at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC)

Event Type
Conference

Location / Date
Hamburg, 07.10.2024 until 08.10.2024

Organizer

German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Michael Otto Foundation and the City of Hamburg. The operational organizer of the conference is the non-profit company Hamburg Sustainability Conference gGmbH.

The HSC is a new conference format aimed at fostering the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the HSC, leading minds from politics, business, science and civil society plan the implementation of joint processes to achieve the SDGs. In times of increasing geopolitical crises, the HSC promotes multilateral exchange, encourages open dialog and aims to strengthen trust in international partnerships. The discussions focus on the design of political frameworks for joint action and the co-creation of breakthroughs to achieve the SDGs. The HSC aims to strengthen the role and responsibility of all stakeholders including the private sector in new sustainability alliances. The programme of the first HSC is clustered around three key issues: First, how can the international financial architecture be reshaped to support sustainability? Second, how to unleash investments for the SDGs? Third, how can transformations be leveraged through resilient food systems, green energy and net zero economies, responsible artificial intelligence and digitalisation, future cities and empowering societies?

As the scientific partner of the HSC, IDOS supports the conference process with its scientific expertise and international networks on key sustainable development issues. IDOS is involved in the co-creation of policy briefs and various sessions at the HSC, among others:

  • Multilateral cooperation for sustainable development
  • Unlocking political contexts for sustainability transformations
  • Economic pathways toward sustainable futures
  • Private investments in green hydrogen
  • Sustainable trade
  • Sustainable finance frameworks
  • Debt management
  • Human rights due diligence in agricultural production

IDOS will contribute to the effective engagement of the younger generations at the HSC and will bring together young professionals  from both its Managing Global Governance and Shaping Futures programmes to feed perspectives of future generations into the debate about sustainable futures, reflect on the HSC and its key outcomes and provide collective recommendations to the organisers and key stakeholders.

Conference participation is invitation-only.

Future Talk: Sustainability versus Autocracy

Date & Time: Tuesday, 08 Oct. 2024, 11:00-13:00

Location: Forum, Chamber of Commerce, 21109 Hamburg

Organizers: IDOS and International IDEA

Description: Discussions about sustainability often focus on technical solutions. However, pathways to sustainable futures also require political solutions. This future talk will address the many ways in which the political context fosters or hinders sustainable futures. We are at a critical moment in global geopolitics, with democracy challenged by growing autocratization and the highest number of military conflicts since the end of the Cold War. The international community cannot afford to ignore the consequences of these pressures as a distraction from and barrier to the urgent need for sustainable transformation at national and global levels. The Russian war in Ukraine and the war in Gaza are increasing political instability, fracturing diplomatic relations, and displacing record numbers of people while nationalist populism and polarization grow. In such environments, how do we advance sustainability? How can stakeholders across politics, governance, peace communities, business, and civil society collaborate to ensure that political and security barriers to sustainability transformations are addressed and prioritized?

Discussants and participants will identify pathways towards more reliable political futures. The future talk aims to build and reinforce reliable alliances across politics, the governance and peace communities, business, and civil society.

Speakers: Kevin Casas-Zamora (IDEA), Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (former German Minister of Defence), Volker Ratzmann (DHL Group) and other high-level guests. Session lead & moderator:Julia Leininger (IDOS)

Location: Börsensaal, Chamber of Commerce, Hamburg

Organizers: IDOS, Global Solutions Initiative (GSI),

Description: The international financial architecture needs a Global debt Governance system that acts swiftly and proactively to ensure that cases of debt distress do not lead to social and economic crises, but rather restore the investment process for sustainable growth. Related reforms would include improving coordination mechanisms and transparency in the G20 Common Framework extended to include MICs and better linked to sustainable longer-term development pathways in line with the SDGs and climate transition.  Part of this proposal is a new G20 Universal Code of Conduct under the Financial Stability Board.
