In recent years, major shifts in global markets from North to South have created a new geography of trade and consumption in the agricultural sector. The processes of twenty-first-century globalization are fundamentally changing the politics and governance of agricultural supply chains, with profound implications for the environment and the effectiveness of transnational business governance.
In this one-hour event, Philip Schleifer (University of Amsterdam) discussed his new book, which offers a political economy analysis of the deepening crisis of commodity-driven deforestation and explores the complex and evolving picture of both the risks and opportunities for sustainable commodity governance in the current phase of globalization. The presentation was followed by a discussion by Khalid Nadvi (University of Manchester) and a Q&A round.
