Extremists of any shape are again at the centre of attention. Radicalization undermines the cultural conditions for cooperation. At the same time some forms of political extremism increase the need for global cooperation by creating new tasks that can't be solved on the national level. In the series 'Narratives of the Extreme' various discursive and practical radicalizations that dominate our current media scene were presented and discussed. The current challenge for cultural sciences is the reification of the debate. Thereto, the question must be asked what is done by radical groups in order to polarize and how to launch the discourse again. Concretely: Which strategies are implemented by extremists to make such radical – and that means mainly totalitarian and closed – worldviews attractive to gain more adherents and to bring radical thinking right into the middle of society.
The lecture was held in German.
