The international Climate Change Conference 2017, under the presidency of Fiji, was held in Bonn from 6 to 17 November 2017. This year’s delegations at the Climate Change Conference (23rd Conference of the Parties) needed to prove their commitment to the climate-related obligations passed in Paris 2015 and Marrakesh 2016. This time, it was all about the implementation of the Paris and process in establishing the Paris rulebook has been made.
However, the focus was not only on climate change. “Especially regarding the presidency of Fiji, a small island state highly affected by climate-change, awareness needs to be raised on the positive connections between climate action and sustainable development,” Dirk Messner, director of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), states. “The Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can only be achieved together as they determine each other.”
Therefore, the DIE explored the connections between SDGs and the Paris Agreement in multiple events in advance and during COP23 and fostered the dialogue between representatives from science, economy, society and politics from the global south and north
Fostering diverse dialogue by DIE
On the weekend before the negotiations started, DIE and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) welcomed high-level guests from the international, national and local politics, economy and civil society as well as from science, media and the arts to the international conference „Climate Action and Human Wellbeing at a Crossroads: Historical Transformation or Backlash?”. (Conference 4 -5.11.2017, further information: www.crossroadsbonn.org)
Furthermore, DIE created with the „Interconnections Zone“ a transdisciplinary room for dialogue, discussion and mutual exchange. With a thematic focus on the synergies between the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, more than 40 events were organised together with more than 100 partner organisations. (Interconnections Zone 6 - 17.11.2017)
