Climate finance to leverage social protection for climate action: what role for the UN climate funds?

Event Type
Roundtable discussion

Location / Date
Bonn, 05.06.2024

Organiser

German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and GIZ

The relevance of social protection for inclusive, people-centred climate action has gained increasing attention under United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) including in the contexts of the work programme on just transition pathways, loss and damage, and the global goal on adaptation. UN climate funds can play an important role in financing social sectors where private investments are not attractive, especially because of their mandate to support climate mitigation and adaptation in low- and middle-income countries.

In the margins of the UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB60), the event will bring together experts of climate finance and/or social protection to discuss the potential of the UNFCCC financial mechanisms to leverage social protection for climate action.
