With a particular focus on SDG 17 and its target 9, the side event during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2018 in New York explored new approaches to building the capacity of civil servants to act in collaborative partnership with diverse stakeholders in the context of the 2030 Agenda. Based on good practices and evidence from diverse countries, participants had the opportunity to provide feedback and develop recommendations concerning capacity-building curricula for public servants. The policy dialogue brought together experts from six schools of public administration in the MGG partner countries Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa. Representatives from Member States, civil society, academia and the private sector shared insights from their research on and experiences with multi-stakeholder partnerships.
The side event was jointly hosted by the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the United Nations System Staff College Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development (UNSSC). It served the purpose to produce joint recommendations to Schools of Public Administration to strengthen the 2030 agenda in the training for civil servants. It was followed by an internal workshop on 12 and 13 July, which took up the recommendations as developed during the side event and developed a 'New York Proposal for a Programme of Action' for Schools of Public Administration and further MGG partner institutions. The programme of action contains joint principles of engagement and sets out an agenda for further collaboration of the MGG network on the implementation of the 2030 agenda with the public sector. The initiatives were follow-up activities of the Managing Global Governance workshop "Capacity-Building for the 2030 Agenda" which took place in Brasilia from 26 February to 1 March 2018.
