Does aid contribute to development? If so, under what conditions and to what extent? These questions are as old as the field of development policy itself and they have been controversially discussed among researchers and policymakers ever since. Yet, current trends like the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, progress (or lack thereof) in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the impact of populist parties on the radical right on development policy and the expanding global importance of rising powers and non-state actors have increased the pressure on donors to demonstrate and communicate the success of aid. In this session, we therefore ask: How will the debate on aid effectiveness change regarding to the overall relevance of aid, the issues discussed and the different communities (research and practice) that are engaged? Towards which direction should the debate evolve and what are promising future directions?
